The straight dope on what's going on in Hip-Hop, Media and Entertainment

Former boxing champion Mike Tyson was arrested December 29 in Scottsdale, Arizona under suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine.

According to the Associated Press, around 1:45 a.m., shortly after leaving a Scottsdale nightclub, Tyson was stopped by police when he ran a stop sign, nearly colliding into a sheriff's vehicle.

"He showed signs of impairment and voluntarily submitted to field sobriety tests," Sgt. Larry Hall said. Hall was working in the area as part of a holiday DUI task force.

The police probable cause statement filed in Maricopa County Superior Court noted that an officer witnessed Tyson attempting to wipe white powder off the console of his BMW while he approached. Officers also said they found two bags of white powder in Tyson's back pocket.

"He said he was an addict and had a problem," the report read. "He admitted possessing the bags of cocaine, and said he uses it anytime he can get his hands on it."

Tyson was booked at the Maricopa County sheriff's jail and held separately from other prisoners for safety reasons.

His stay was relatively brief. This afternoon Tyson is a free man. He appeared in Maricopa County Superior Court this morning on the drug possession charge and was released without bond. He did not have a lawyer present and was not required to enter a plea. He has not been charged for DUI.

The terms of his release require Tyson to submit to drug and alcohol testing. He is also forbidden to drink or take nonprescription drugs while the case is pending
