Jay-Z's planned debut concert in China next month has reportedly been cancelled by the country's Culture Ministry, who allegedly deem the rapper's lyrics too offensive and have cited a need to protect local hip-hop fans.
According to Sun Yun of KS Production Co. (the promoters of the show), who spoke to The Shanghai Daily yesterday (October 10), the ministry denied Jay-Z permission to perform because his "songs contain too much vulgar language."
The cancellation could not be immediately confirmed, but a notice posted Wednesday (October 11) on an online ticket booking website, Tickets365, said the concert had been postponed.
Jay (born Sean Carter) was to make his China debut at Shanghai's Hongkou Stadium on October 23rd. Some critics of the ministry decision point out that the Black Eyed Peas performed their sexually suggestive songs in the city just three months ago.
According to local promoter Sun Yun, China's Ministry of Culture denied Jay-Z's performance because of the "vulgar language" in some of his lyrics.
Jay-Z was confident he would soon land on China's mainland to give a concert for his fans.
"I look forward to rescheduling my concert date in Shanghai," Jay-Z told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "This world tour has been a life changing experience and it has only been made better by touching the fans that I am seeing for the first time."
Today (Oct. 11), Jay-Z is in Cape Town, South Africa for a performance at the Belleville Velodrome.
As SOHH previously reported, Hov is currently on a world tour and will be using his global trek to visit regions plagued with unsanitary water. MTV will document and broadcast his journey in November.
The Brooklyn bred rapper is also gearing up for the release of his tenth solo album titled Kingdom Come. Due in stores on November 21st, the album will feature production from Just Blaze, Kanye West, Dr. Dre, and Coldplay front man Chris Martin, among others.
Two singles off the new LP, titled "Show Me What You Got" and "Kingdom Come" have already leaked onto the internet. Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex premiered "Kingdom Come" yesterday (October 10) while "Show Me What You Got," the album's first single leaked on Friday (October 6).
"Show Me What You Got" will be officially added to radio station play lists this week and is predicted to have a major debut on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The video for "Show Me What You Got" will debut on MTV on October 16th. The clip , directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), features Jay racing NASCAR driver Danica Patrick through the winding roads of Monaco in a sports car with racing star Dale Earnhardt Jr. riding shotgun. He later appears on a speedboat, at a luxurious party and at a casino.
