The straight dope on what's going on in Hip-Hop, Media and Entertainment

Jan 10, 2005

It’s official. Hip-hop’s golden son Nas and his proclaimed “wifey” Kelis have gotten married after a two-year engagement. The crazy-in-love hip-hop pair hitched Saturday (Jan. 8) in Atlanta, according to sources with AllHipHop.com.

The small ceremony consisted of only close friends and family, including Nas’ father Olu Dara, who appears on Nas’ latest song, “Bridging the Gap.” Nas' brother Jungle was the best man.

The smitten rapper proposed to Kelis on Christmas Eve 2002 at her mother’s home.

The two met at P. Diddy’s after-party for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, which Nas said he didn’t want to attend initially. His longtime producer friend Steve Stoute convinced him to fly to New York for the show on August 29. Nas proclaimed that the encounter with Kelis was love at first sight.

However contrary to the small gathering that took place, Nasir “Nas” Jones once professed that his wedding would be a grand ceremony in the song “Getting Married” off the Queensbridge rapper’s recently released Streets Disciple double LP.

“[We] spoke on eloping, but then I deaded the thought/’cause she deserves Cinderella's ball and the whole s**t,” Nas raps.

Before the wedding, a source reportedly revealed that a secret wedding would be surprising since Nas seemed to want a large, traditional service. But plans of a covert ceremony emerged when Kelis reportedly cancelled a London concert.

A spokesperson for the London nightspot, Club Koko, where Kelis was supposed to perform, said the Harlem songstress called off the show due to last-minute plans. "She simply told us she couldn't honor the commitment,” the rep told a UK publication. “We didn't even know she was getting married this week."

Nas recently talked up his lady in an interview with AllHipHop.com last summer, describing Kelis as his perfect match. “Everything is just easy. Even when s**t is crazy with me and her, s**t is easy at the same time,” Nas said. “I’m an easygoing person and she’s that way too in a lot of ways. She’s a Leo so she’s fiery too but everything is just easy.”

Kelis, too, admitted that she and Nas have a laid-back relationship, telling Trace magazine recently that the duo often listen to jazz records together. She also said that unlike many other famous couples, their relationship is solid.

Nas ends his song “Getting Married” with, “I'm stayin’/I'm sayin’ vows all true/Will you take music as your wedded wife? I Do/Sike, this ain't about music, y'all know who I'm talkin' to/I'm getting married.” The rest is kismet.

Nas will return to music at the end of January to promote his latest double album, Streets Disciple.

Will Smith recently sold a property in his hometown where he planned to develop a hotel and shopping center.

The city initially gave Smith the go-ahead to build a luxury hotel and retail complex on the vacant lot in Philadelphia's historical Society Hill section several years ago, promising $9 million in tax incentives to advance the project.

Plans were delayed due to the weak hotel market.

The luxury hotel was to provide a view of the nearby Delaware River and would have also been in the vicinity of South Street and Independence Hall, two of the city's most recognized tourist areas.

Will and his brother Harry Smith sold the vacant site to Sant Properties for $10.5 million, roughly three times more than what the family bought the property for five years ago.

Sant Properties intends to construct condominiums in the location formerly known as NewMarket, which was previously lined with stores and restaurants.

Smith's Treyball Development real estate firm has invested millions of dollars renovating buildings and regions around Philadelphia, including a former furniture company, a historical townhouse and a funeral home.

In 2002, Treyball Development, named after Smith's son Trey, won the rights to build a minority owned 500 room hotel in Broward County, Florida.

Treyball took the project after the county cut ties with the previous developer.

The year 2003 was supposed to mark the end of Skillz’s popular yearly “Rap Up” songs, but the Virginia native has exclusively released the 2004 to the glee of fans, DJs and other MC’s.

After opting out last year, he said the public convinced him to forge ahead with the series, which explains why the track hits the music circuit later than usual.

“The people made this one happen. I didn't really wanna do it. I was trippin off of it. But after Christmas everyone started calling and stopping me while I was out [upset] like ‘You ain’t gon' do it?” he explained to AllHipHop.com. “Supply and demand-its as simple as that. It was funny to hear that other people did one once they heard I wasn't gonna do one.”

Other rappers like Pack FM and relative unknown BeeKay have also released similar songs in the past weeks, but Skillz said a conversation with a DJ changed his mind.

“I got a call from a radio station on New Year’s Eve while I’m at a party like ‘We got Skillz on the line and we been getting emails and faxes all night asking why you didn't do your ‘04 Rap Up this year?’ And I'm in a party yelling into a celly tryin to explain why I didn't do one,” he said. Finally, the tremendous demand was victorious and Skillz opted to record the track.

Skillz himself has been the topic of many 2004 wrap-ups, by both rappers and writers, after his rap sparring session with basketball star Shaquille O’Neil made headlines in 2004.

“The Shaq issue is just small. Not really a big deal to me. I had no idea it was in other people’s "rap ups" because I didn't listen to them. The Shaq s**t was something to do for a second,” he quipped.

In the meantime, Skillz said he’s about to begin work on another commercial release.

“I'm still touring like crazy, gotta get back in the lab though. I been touring so much that I'm running outta records to perform so I gotta get back in the booth and bang these songs out,” he said.

Skillz has also recently finished filming an independent film and occupies himself writing R&B songs under an alias.

(this will be his third rap up, and in my opinion probably the weakest - Rob)

Before unveiling his new album St Valentine’s Day Massacre to the public, 50 Cent recently collaborated with DJ Whoo Kid to compose a brand new mixtape entitled “2050: Before The Massacre.”

The mixtape, which is scheduled to hit the circuit later this week will contain an exclusive collection of all new freestyles and will feature the album’s first official single, “Candy Shop” featuring Olivia.

“The freestyles are all new. Nothing old,” DJ Whoo kid confessed to MTV.com. “We [were] in the studio for two days straight, dirty as f**k. Nobody left, nobody took a shower, just straight freestyles.”

The highly controversial “Piggyback” song, which reportedly disses Fat Joe and Jadakiss among others failed to make the mixtape but Whoo Kid did note that 50 will still have a lot to say. “He's addressing people like crazy on the new [mixtape], but “Piggyback” we're gonna save for the next one.”

50 Cent’s St Valentine’s Day Massacre is scheduled to arrive on shelves March 8 and the accompanying video for “Candy Shop” will hit television within weeks.

Neptunes producer Pharrell Williams and his clothing company BBC are reportedly suing Reebok for $4 million in damages, alleging that the sports apparel giant violated a contract between the two parties.

Pharrell's clothing and footwear brand BBC (Billionaire Boys Club) filed a complaint in New York court Dec. 17, 2004, claiming that Reebok did not produce garments up to BBC's standards.

According to the complaint, Reebok personnel told BBC that Reebok could not produce the entire line of goods to meet BBC's approval "in a manner consistent with the design and quality standards and specifications required by BBC."

The grievance also stated that Reebok failed to ship clothing by the June 1, 2004 deadline.

"Reebok repeatedly assured BBC that the non-conforming and disapproved aspects of these samples would be corrected," the complaint stated. "Reebok, however, failed to correct these deficiencies."

Pharrell launched his collection of Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream footwear in September 2004 as part of a long-term licensing agreement between him and Reebok.

BBC is reportedly seeking a minimum of $1.6 million in damages on three counts of breach of contract.

A Reebok representative said the company declines comment during legal affairs.

Actor Samuel L Jackson clearly wouldn't spare a dime for rapper 50 Cent.

The Pulp Fiction star has turned down a role in Irish director Jim Sheridan's new flick because the hip- hop homeboy was already in the cast.

Sam, 56, is so precious he won't work with "unproved" actors - even though he has no qualms about starring in TV ads.

He said: "Hollywood people think because one is successful in one aspect of entertainment, they can bring them into this particular world and make a success out of them. These people think they are worthy of you sharing time on screen with them. I don't particularly think that. Maybe if 50 Cent does five movies and shows me some talent..."

Cam’ron had announced on the radio that he would no longer be a part of Def Jam after Jay-Z had been appointed as the president and the consequential sale of Roc-A-Fella, but now it looks like Killa Cam is still a part of the label.

Sources are saying that no matter what Cam has said, he is still contractually bound to the label. In the meantime, the purple panther is pursuing other ventures. Besides his side deals with liquor, the
Dipset, and other ventures, he intends to bring a new movie to video and pay-per-view.

The movie is titled “What’s Really Good” and is rumored to be hitting pay-per-view real soon. But despite internet rumors that Cam was tinkering with the porn industry (which he has since denounced) the flick will be more “Street’s is Watching” than “Cam does Dallas”.

For months Chingy was let the cheap shots and low blows from Nelly and Ludacris pass with the wind. But apparently the St Louis rapper can’t take it anymore and is rapping about it.

"I'm tired of these guys — I'm talking about Ludacris and Nelly — I'm tired of these guys taking shots at me." Chingy told MTV.

The party rapper has gotten a little fierce as of late and his dis track called “We Got” has leaked to the net.

He shoots off at Nelly "I heard that song, boy; it ain't another, boy," he raps, backed by his crew, the Hood Starz. "Better keep my name out your mouth, boy/ ... I been discovered, boy; that's why you hatin', boy/ ... The media hyped you, boy/ KRS crushed you, boy/ ... Put up the chains, bars and the platinum teeth, boy/ And bring the drama beef, trouble to the streets, boy/ You started it, boy/ Well, I'mma finish, boy."

While he had chosen to keep the beef under wraps, Chingy just felt the need to air it out. “I'm the one who sold 3 million records, and I'm still getting money back that [Disturbing Tha Peace] had in their possession. Ludacris knows what I'm talking about." Chingy spoke of his separation from Luda’s DTP label.

"I ain't hiding from it no more," Chingy said. "I ain't with all this foolishness, but if you gonna make songs about me and speaking about me in these interviews, I'm not gonna hide in no shell.”
